As you may have guessed by his name, Malinese guitar-player Vieux Farka Touré is indeed the son of Ali Farka Touré, a Mali blues legend. His musical career started off by trying to copy his father's music flawlessly. After that, he joined the band of Toumani Diabeté, the most famous kora player in the world.
On his self-titled debut, his father's famous desert blues sound can still be heard as an influence. Vieux really managed to develop a sound of his own over the years, though. He combines traditional African influences (like on the much lauded album World Village) with hypnotizing, modern beats and a jazzy lounge-like sound (like on Ufos Over Bamako, a remix version of World Village). His previous album Fono (and remix version Other Roads), released last year, did very well in end year polls.
And just like his father, Vieux Farka Touré is often praised worldwide for both his albums and his dynamic live-reputation. And let's not forget that he's not only a very gifted guitar-player; he's also a very good drummer and a calabas player. On stage he's joined by a bass-player, a drummer, a percussionist and a guitar-player. As you may have guessed, Vieux is a lot rawer and more intense than on his albums. Something we certainly don't mind.
