In a relatively short amount of time, the band Black Country, New Road has managed to become one of the most-praised British rock bands in recent years.
Black Country, New Road is one of the leading bands within the new wave of experimental post-punk. Their sound is characterized by a unique “sprechgesang” style, a mix of talking and singing.
The seven-piece band from Cambridgeshire was founded in 2018 and quickly managed to turn heads of music fans. Early 2021, Isaac Wood, Lewis Evans, Tyler Hyde, Charlie Wayne, May Kershaw, Luke Mark and Georgia Ellery broke onto the international scene with their debut album. “For the First Time” mixes piano, guitar, strings and brass, combining them with hard-hitting and romantic lyrics. The album was an instant hit and led to a coveted Mercury Prize nomination.
With successor “Ants From Up Here” (2022), the seven-piece band went for an even more subtle sound, using influences from indie folk from acts like Pulp and The Divine Comedy. Despite the departure of front man Isaac Wood, the band kept on going as a six-piece. The band managed to rejuvenate their sound and, more importantly, touch audiences worldwide with their third album “Forever Howlong”. This album is completely different from its predecessors: ambitious, eccentric and completely incomparable with any other band. The Guardian gave the album a triumphant five-star review, speaking of a “magical resurrection”. It is clear that there are very few bands just like Black Country, New Road around.
The band once played their very first European show ever at Valkhof Festival. They also played the Red Hall of Doornroosje at Zeitgeist a few years ago and are now back for a performance in the gorgeous Openluchttheater De Goffert.
