Los Angeles band Dummy finds inspiration in sixties melodies and nineties noise pop/rock. They also add some shoegaze, drone and even whiffs of new age, minimalism and jazz to the mix, keeping things interesting not just for themselves, but also for their audience.
Dummy is an off-shoot of indie/shoegaze band Wildhoney: guitarists Joe Trainor and Nathan O’Dell, and drummer Alex Ewell, found a perfect band addition in singer, bassist, keyboardist Emma Maatman. After the release of EPs “Dummy” and “EP2” in 2020, they released their debut “Mandatory Enjoyment” in 2021. This is an album full of contradictions, bringing together accessible songs like ‘Daffodils’ with experimental soundscapes and bitter texts about the burdens of modern life, conservatism, and the collapse of the environment, among other subjects. Recommended to fans of My Bloody Valentine, Cloud Nothings, Stereolab, Stuck, Yo La Tengo.
