Joan As Police Woman is coming back to Nijmegen to play in the small hall of Doornroosje for an intimate performance. She will play both songs from her upcoming album and older work.
Joan Wasser has had an impressive career so far. Most strikingly, the multi-instrumentalist from New York was part of bands like Antony and the Johnsons and the one supporting Rufus Wainwright. She also contributed to music by Nick Cave, Scissor Sisters, Lou Reed, Flaming Lips and Sparklehorse.
After a lifetime supporting others, Joan released an album of her own in 2006, “Real Life”. It was one of the biggest surprised of that year with a beautiful atmosphere. Joan referred to it as “Funk rock R&B”, but realized that “American Soul Music” is probably more apt. She combines soul and punk (two genres she loves the most) and cites Al Green, Nina Simone, The Smiths and Siouxsie Sioux as the most important influences.
Her gorgeous, dark voice is somewhat reminiscent of that of Dusty Springfield and Chrissie Hynde. The singer-songwriter manages to capture and keep an audience’s attention with her mix of songs that move from subtle to heavy and from light to dark. Tonight, she will play two sets of around 45-50 minutes, with a 20 minute break in-between.
