Meitei / 冥丁

Meitei is the alter ego of the Hiroshima musician Daisuke Fujita. He has released a number of impressive albums so far in which he creates a deep connection with Japanese culture, nature and history. In his work Meitei uses audio samples of old Japanese movies and found audio recordings, field recordings of the ocean, forests and traditional music, and puts a thick layer of analogue dust on top of it.

The producer managed to impress Japanese listeners and far beyond with his debut “Kwaidan”, which was hailed by Pitchfork as one of the “Best Experimental Albums” of that year. Successor “Komachi” (2019) progressed from the sound of the debut. The biggest leap in his sound came with his two concept albums “Kofū” and “Kofū II” from 2020 and 2021: while the first two releases were abstract and meandering, the artist decided to put more of a focus on the pulse, the beat on these two records. Think J. Dilla meets Steve Reich. Meitei is highly recommended to both enthusiasts of ambient and electronics/beats.
