A new, quickly rising band in the ever-expanding Irish scene is modernlove. The Irish band, featuring young twenty-somethings, have been streamed millions of times and are have sold out venues in Ireland, England and Europe.
The band modernlove. consists of childhood friends Barry Lally (vocals/guitar), Graham Fagen (guitar), Daniel Rooney (bass), and Cian McClusky (drums). They have played together since 2016 and find inspiration in acts like The 1975, Bloc Party, Inhaler, The Cure, The Vamps and Two Door Cinema Club. In recent years, they have been out on tour with bands like Everything Everything, We Are Scientists and Nation of Language.
During the first COVID lockdown, the four students retreated to their rooms to write songs, one of which, ‘Let Me Know’, eventually led to them being discovered by Akira Records. Since then, they have released their debut EP “monochrome blue” in 2021, and follow-ups “Oh My Mind” (2022) and “Nightlife” (2023). There is a full range in their indie pop rock pallet, further demonstrated through their fourth EP “Something to Hold On To” that came out in 2024.
How would they describe their own sound? “That changes every week! We could be making ambient, noisy dance music, emo, pop punk or indie. The one returning element is that it’s melodic and in a major key. We are all involved in producing and writing. The style of a song can be picked by just one of us, and then we all jump on it to add our personalities and ideas.”
Their latest EP was written from the perspective of and inspired by their teenage years and young adulthood. They give their music a cheerful, catchy rock twist, which results in music that’s pleasant on the ears and great for dancing. So, grab a beverage, enter the dance floor, make mistakes and prepare to fall in love with modernlove.
