Manchester-based PIJN bridges the gap between a number of (sub)genres with their sound, following a unique vision that uses elements from post rock and metal for an organic and impressive whole.
Exhibit A for this is their debut album “Loss” from 2018, an album that deals with heavy subjects like sadness, denial, anger, depression, reflection and acceptance. It results in a complex and detailed work that deserves multiple listens for full comprehension. Within the same song, you can often hear heavy riffs with esoteric piano pieces and strings without it ever turning into a cliche. The record eventually leads up to a chaotic, hectic, yet masterful climax. It is truly impressive what PIJN managed to do on this album.
The band is still evolving, as a collaborative project with their fellow countrymen Conjurer demonstrates. In 2019, they released “Curse These Metal Hands”, naming it after a concept taken from British comedy series Peep Show. The album is very much focused of heavy riffs, taking cues from bands like Baroness, ISIS and Mastodon. New material is on the way. We can’t wait until PIJN hits the stage in Merleyn, as this is bound to be a very special show.
