Instrumental quintet Surprise Chef is coming to the Netherlands for the very first time. The band from Melbourne, Australia has a solid fanbase in their home country. Surprise Chef finds inspiration in film scores from the seventies, in the funkiest side of jazz and in the roots of essential hip hop samples. Surprise Chef pushes the boundaries of instrumental soul and funk with an approach of their own. By spending tons of hours in the studio, these ‘groove masters’ have been studying the sound in-depth, leading to a whole new perspective.
The first two albums gained them a die-hard fanbase that spread their music like gospel all across the globe. The band has signed with label Big Crown Records since then, which has them sharing the roster with acts that they count among their inspirations: Lee Fields, Liam Bailey, El Michels Affair, Black Thought, Bobby Oroza and Sunny and the Sunliners. In 2022 their new album “Education&Recreation” came out, once again a terrific collection of instrumental gems. Clash Magazine described it as “one of the finest soul and funk albums of the past 18 months”.
