Average White Band
Average White Band is often seen as one of the best soul, rhythm & blues and funk bands around. The instrumental megahit ‘Pick up the Pieces’ was their big breakthrough and many successes followed after that. The band is influenced by jazz legends that include Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Hancock and the Crusaders and even soul legends like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Al Green and Stevie Wonder.
The cold Scottish highlands and warm-blooded soul and funk: a bigger contrast is hardly imaginable. Yet their authentic soulful mix is timeless and embraced by loyal fans all over the world. The Average White band has proven since the early seventies that the Celtic land of kilts and whiskey is capable of producing steamy, soulful funk just as easily.
More than forty years after starting off the band is still at the top of its game. Average White Band celebrated its 40 year anniversary in 2014. The band scored major hits in the seventies and has made a large contribution to the current day hip hop and R&B scene. Ballads like ‘Cloudy’, ‘A Love of your Own’ and ‘If I ever Lose this Heaven’ are often regarded as some of the best soul songs ever. Expect a selection tonight with songs from their numerous influential albums.
The band consists of the Scotts Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre, who will be joined on stage by American musicians Rocky Bryant (drums), Freddy V. (saxophone), Rob Aries (keys) and Brent Carter (vocals).
