Aziza Brahim comes from the Western Sahara, a piece of land that’s partly annexed by Morocco. She has lived in a refugee camp in Algeria for a while, along with other repressed people from the Saharawi.
Brahim discovered as a means of expression to spread the universal message of justice. Her music deals with themes of hope and freedom. Brahim and her band members combine desert blues and folk with traditional African and Spanish influences. Brahim sings and plays the tabal, a traditional drum from the Sahawari culture.
In 2014 her successful debut album “Soutak” was released by Chris Eckman’s Glitterbeat label; Eckman was also producer of the record. It managed to top the World Music Charts Europe list for a while. Shortly thereafter she performed at Jools Holland and in Vrije Geluiden. In 2016 her second album “Abbar El Hamada” came out.
