Carlton Jumel Smith
Carlton Jumel Smith is a late bloomer in the world of traditional soul music. Mojo Magazine compared him to legends like Bobby Womack, Al Green and Curtis Mayfield. Debut album “1634 Lexington Avenue” came out earlier this year through Timmion/Daptone Records and is an absolute sensation. The record was recorded in Helsinki, Europe’s hotspot for soul and R&B.
As a young boy Carlton Jumel Smith regularly visited the iconic Apollo in Harlem with his mother. Carlton was fascinated by his personal hero James Brown, who taught him that you have to mesmerize and entertain your audience in equal measure, a lesson he has taken to heart as his Merleyn performance will demonstrate.
