Curtis Harding has soul running through his veins. As the son of a gospel singer he learnt at a very young age that music doesn’t just revolve around the prettiest voice and reaching the right notes, but that emotions and honesty play an even bigger part. This is what he has in common with some of his biggest examples, like Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Bo Diddley and B.B. King.
Curtis Harding had already collaborated with Outkast and Cee-Lo Green when he met Cole Alexander of The Black Lips. The two men shared a passion for vintage soul music and decided to work together. It sounds like an impossible combination to have a garage rocker and a soul singer in a single band, but the result is remarkable: Harding’s debut album “Soul Power“.
“Face Your Fear”, his second album, came out last year and was produced by Danger Mouse and Sam Cohen. On this album his talents once again are played to their strengths: his kinetic mix of styles like soul, rhythm & blues, and rock. Some of the songs are even reminiscent of those of Curtis Mayfield and James Brown. Curtis Harding doesn’t mind taking some influences from soul’s past, but always does this with respect and giving it a contemporary twist of his own.
