Devendra Banhart + Vetiver
Eclectic songsmith Devendra Banhart is coming to Nijmegen for a performance at Doornroosje’s Red Stage. Banhart isn’t just a skilled artist, hipster avant-la-lettre and shaman, but also an immensely fascinating musicians that leads you towards the deepest part of his inner thoughts. He regards his musical career as a journey of discovery.
Devendra Banhart was born in Houston but grew up in Venezuela. He came back to this land of birth when he was 13 years old. Devendra was discovered almost by accident by Michael Gira of Swans, who also released Banhart’s album “Oh Me Oh My…”. When Banhart managed to break through worldwide in 2005 with his album “Cripple Crow”, he became the figurehead of the freak folk movement. Banhart is one of the most well-known artists from the so called New Weird America movement, which is a group of like-minded musicians that use an adventurous approach towards styles like folk, psych rock and electronical music. This movement includes artists like Bon Iver, Antony and the Johnsons, Animal Collective, CocoRosie and Alela Diane. Albums like “Rejoicing in the Hands”, “Niño Rojo” and “Mala” were very well-received. On 13 September Banhart is releasing his new album “Ma”.
