Irreversible Entanglements was founded in 2015 by poets and musician Camae Ayewa (better known as Moor Mother), bassist Luke Stewart and saxophonist Keir Neuringer. They came together for a show at ‘Musicians Against Police Brutality’, an event inspired by Akai Gurley’s gruesome murder in New York by police bullets.

They recorded their debut album in a day and the band has since expanded to include trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes. The album features engaging jazz, improv, spoken word and socially-engaged and political lyrics. The song ‘Chicago to Texas’ deals with the issue of slavery for example, while ‘Fireworks’ deals with police brutality and racism. The album came out in 2017 through the International Anthem & Don Giovanni label and is absolutely one of the most relevant and urgent jazz releases of 2017.

“It’s a harrowing listen, and one of the most powerful and relevant works of art you’ll encounter this year.” – The Quietus

“Irreversible Entanglements’ self-titled debut wakes the frozen body to move, the dead mind to react, the mute mouth to scream resistance.” – NPR
