Kikagaku Moyo (Japanese for “geometric patterns”) is a Tokyo-based psychedelic rock band. Their music is a mixture of krautrock, Indian ragas, acid folk and seventies rock. They say much of their work deals with freedom of spirit and mind, and bridging the gap between the supernatural and the real world.
Improvisation is a key element in their sound. There’s a tight balance between heavy, almost crushing jams with softer, more dreamy and meditative songs, something that results in almost endless jam sessions. Their lyrics are in Japanese, but this is a band of whom the lyrics aren’t essential to enjoy its brilliance. The band was founded by Go Kurosawa and Tomo Katsurada in the Summer of 2012 in Tokyo. Originally, they started off as a street band, but they quickly grew into a tight group of multi-instrumentalists. The five-piece band is a kind of jam collective full of free spirits. Go and Tomo run their own record label Guruguru Brain in Amsterdam that is also home to their own releases.
