The four lads of Kiwi Jr. make catchy pop songs with sharp lyrics that effortlessly reach back to the nineties. The Canadians have a student-like, youthful appearance that fits in with the ramshackle guitar pop of Weezer, the dry humor of Pavement and the fast-paced nature of seventies college punk, up to and including the roaring slogan refrains. There’s some love for Britpop in the mix as well.
You may be familiar with the guitarist, as Brian Murphy also plays bass in noise and dream pop band Alvvays. After their 2020 debut “Football Money” they released a successor earlier this year called “Cooler Returns”, a terrific source of energy that makes you want to move. All frustration related to Corona is cast out through their collection of surprisingly eclectic and catchy guitar riffs. They create a world of their own full of daydreaming and absurd humor. “Cooler Returns” offers a musical escape for everyone who just wants to forget the terrible outside world for a while.
