Ufomammut

The Italian doom trio of Ufomammut is a welcome sight in Nijmegen. The band is known for their heavy, mesmerizing riffs on a backdrop of spacey synths and a rhythm section that’s forever plugging away. This time they bring new material to this second edition of Soulcrusher. The extended, epic and – most of all – heavy riffs are enhanced by demented, alienating visuals.

Conan

The British lads of Conan aren’t known for their subtlety. We don’t need to say all that much about it: their slow-paced, almost lethargic doom metal rolls through a desolate landscape like a locomotive. Conan is the musical equivalent of a hammer to the forehead. Be forewarned.

Monolord

Obey the riff! Stoner doom bullies Monolord released their debut “Empress Rising” to the world in 2014 and ever since then the Swedish band is a constant source of strong releases. Their latest album “Lord of Suffering/Die in Haze” EP came out in August 2016 but they are already going to release another album through Riding Easy Records this year.

Celeste

As a replacement of Tombs we have found the French blackened hardcore sludgers from Celeste ready to play a show on Soulcrusher! Performances of these gentlemen are extraordinary and unique, a light show is missing, only a few red lights on the band members adorn the decor for their hyperintense and ultraheavy livesets. The new album ‘Infidèle (s)’ will be released shortly.

Today Is The Day

Twenty years ago “Temple of the Morning Star” came out through the renowned Relapse Records label. It’s the fourth album of Today Is The Day, the band fronted by Steve Austin. The record is a milestone in the genre and a career highlight for the American band: it is an urgent, heavy album with a manic, disturbing amalgam of metal and noise core. The anger and aggression is palpable, just the way we like it. The world is just as messed up as it was twenty years ago; it’s as if nothing has changed in the meantime… This show of Today Is The Day is all about the anniversary of “Temple of the Morning Star”.

Dodecahedron

There is a healthy supply of new extreme, progressive metal in our country. Dodecahedron is one of those bands, recently releasing their very impressive album “Kwintessens”. Loud, rampaging black metal with a whiff of madness and only a few moments of respite with slower psychedelic intermezzos. The tight drumming, dissonant guitar riffing and maniacal singing turn Dodecahedron into a unique band within this dark landscape; this is a band to cherish.

Emptiness

With “Not For Music”, Brussel-based band Emptiness has released an impressive and remarkable album this year. It’s a record that is hard to describe in its unique approach to sound and mood: alienating, heavy, dark and all-encompassing at the same time. We are looking forward to their Nijmegen debut.

Déluge

There have been a lot of terrific extreme metal bands from France in recent years. Déluge is most definitely one of them. The band combines crushing black metal with suspenseful post-hardcore, with their most recent album ‘Æther’ as a good example of that. It is an intelligent, complex, progressive album that features both ultrafast blast beats/riffs and gorgeous, mesmerizing sections. With their tight performance and full production it is no surprise to us that these gentlemen have been asked on tour by Gojira as their support.

Ulsect

A band with ex-members of Textures and Dodecahedron sounds already great. Even more interesting when the debut record is released via Season Of Mist. The titeless record sounds brutal, is truly overwhelming and has a great production. Heavy and dissonant death, post-black metal, stepping on the break regularly. Precisely in those slow sections Ulsect creates an intense, almost suffocating atmosphere.

Rorcal

The Swiss band Rorcal made a great impression last year with their album ‘Creon’. An intriguingly dark piece of music inspired by the Greek mythology and with influences from various genres, from postcore to doom and black metal. Live shows of Rorcal are something to look out for, it’s their natural habitat, an all crushing experience.

Usnea

Portland-based Usnea is a well-known face in the doom genre. The band released its second album in 2015 through Relapse. “Random Cosmic Violence” is of a monopolistic darkness that is almost unique: colossal riffs with thundering drums and deep, guttural vocals. It doesn’t really get any heavier than this. Let Usnea slowly crush you into oblivion.

Galg

Inferno

Inferno from Czech Republic is known for their gloomy and intense black metal that is similar to that of Mayhem. The mystical and by times hysterical atmosphere in their sound is strengthened by the low, dark, acid drenched, deep echoes of front man Adramalech’s voice. Their brand new album “Gnosis Kardias (of Transcension and Involution” has been very well received.
