Kassi Valazza makes timeless music in which dreamy folk and traditional country come together effortlessly.
The Portland, Oregon musician Kassi Valazza currently lives in New Orleans. Her most recent album “From Newman Street” (2025) is like a contemporary version of Joni Mitchell’s “Hejira”. Kassi explores the world around her on this album, using subdued magic in her words and music, but also utilizing humour. She wrote the album partly in the studio in Portland, partly in her new surroundings in New Orleans. Valazza’s music is full of movement and reflection.
Her breakthrough in 2023, with the album “Kassi Valazza Knows Nothing”, is a gorgeous collection of melancholy songs that deal with passion, travel and self-reflection. With a voice that’s reminiscent of Sandy Denny and Karen Dalton, and an atmosphere that’s both desolate and soothing, Valazza has carved out a unique spot within Americana for herself. Her support band adds a nice psychedelic and raw edge to her music live on stage, resulting in a sound that is sometimes like a desert storm, sometimes like a babbling brook.
