aja monet is a Grammy nominated blues poet from Brooklyn who performs her liberating slam poetry with an intense and inspired energy. This energy is strengthened by the skilled jazz musicians of her band that turn every performance into an engaging experience. Her poems explore deep societal issues like activism, resistance, love and tireless search for happiness.

The poems of aja monet come out of an urge to express her feelings. Her poems, books, music and other art act as powerful bearers of her activist messages that are intended for societal change. The revolution will not be televised!

During this performance, monet shall play material from her acclaimed debut album “when the poems do what they do”, as well as new material. From a young age, she has been performing in the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café. Aged 19, she became the youngest Grand Slam Poetry Champion in the history of the venue.

On her debut album, she collaborated with the best of the New York jazz scene, including with Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah (previously Christian Scott), Marcus Gilmore, Elena Pinderhughes, Luques Curtis, Samora Pinderhughes and Weedie Braimah. Her new album is expected for later this year, so it is possible we hear some new material from that record as well. Make sure to watch her Tiny Desk Top session for an even more complete view of this rising star.
