After shows in Merleyn and at the Valkhof Festival, we now welcome Algiers to Doornroosje. The Atlanta, Georgia band released their 2015 self-titled debut and successor “The Underside of Power” as a trio through the Matador Records label. Nowadays Algiers is a quartet; early 2020 they released their third album “There Is No Year”. The planned tour couldn’t take place for well-known reasons. Fortunately, the band will return to our Purple Hall to make up for it.
The genres that Algiers use in their music are numerous. Post-punk, MC5-styled rock, psychedelia, electronics, noise, industrial, soul, gospel, blues: it’s all there. Always with a great sense of timing and melody: from piano sections to guitar explosions, and from heavy synths to up-tempo beats. The sound of Algiers is unique.
The name of the band was taken from the film “The Battle of Algiers” from 1966. This is a movie about the resistance to French colonialism in Algiers. The lyrics of front man Franklin James Fisher are based on his own youth experiences with racism in the South of the United States. Even today this is still a touchy and more than relevant subject in the world.
Support act for tonight will be French band QUINQUIS.
