Belgium has been delivering top acts in the harder dark segment for years. On Saturday 10 January, three excellent examples of this are on the bill: Briqueville, Hemelbestormer and Modder.

Briqueville has been surrounded by mystery for years, partly due to their masks on stage. Their mesmerizing sound is engaging and consists of a heavy mix of doom metal, post-rock and dark, repetitive rhythms, further enhanced by suspenseful guitar work and esoteric vocals. Briqueville shows are an experience.

With roots in Limburg and led by guitarist Filip Dupont, Hemelbestormer weaves extremity, tranquillity and menace into an atmospheric and layered sound that strikes a balance between sultry dynamics and serene intensity. Their engaging, instrumental mix of post-metal, doom, sludge and ambient are characterized by extended compositions with a cosmic feel. You can hear this on their latest album “The Radiant Veil” as well, which came out on Pelagic Records.

Modder is a five-piece band from Ghent that serves up brutal, instrumental sludge and doom metal, supplemented with industrial and electronic influences for a lumbering, mud-filled sound. No pun intended, that’s just how it is. Live, Modder hits even harder than on record. Their new album, “Destroying Ourselves for a Place in the Sun”, will be released in October via Nijmegen-based Laybare Recordings.
