Something is brewing in Glasgow. In recent years, the city of imposing architecture and notorious rain showers has emerged as a true jazz hotspot. One of the highlights is corto.alto, the band led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Liam Shortall.
Liam Shortall provides hypnotic keyboard sounds and effortlessly switches between keys and guitar, bass, and trombone during live shows. On debut album “Bad With Names” (2023), corto.alto delivers an accessible sound, but beneath the surface, it is brimming with subtle tempo shifts. The band weaves together diverse musical styles in an inimitable manner, ranging from hip-hop, broken beats, and dub to jazz. The result: an enchanting fusion that challenges the boundaries of contemporary jazz.
This spring, new music is expected to come out: “WHODIS” is a collaboration with rapper Mick Jenkins from Chicago. ‘THIEF’ is the teaser single they put out, which announces the new direction of corto.alto.
