It is neither country, nor western. Th Nashville band Country Westerns mixes roots rock with punk and rock & roll in their own, unique way. Their music sounds a bit like Slobberbone, Uncle Tupelo and The Replacements.
The first Country Westerns EP contained a number of covers of songs from inspiring artists, like Richard Thompson, Jad Fair and Dead Moon. In 2020, their self-titled debut album came out with 12 up-tempo songs with gritty guitars, heavy drums and the passionate singing of front man Joey Plunket.
Plunket started his career in the hardcore scene. The Atlanta-born musician decided to favour acoustic guitar over the electric one and started a solo career. This went well until he met Brian Kotzur, who is an underground legend from Nashville who also drummed with Silver Jews and Crooked Fingers. His percussive talents also resulted in him playing in a band with Duane Denison of The Jesus Lizard, and with country legends Bobby Bare Jr. and Charlie Louvin. Jordan Jones – previously with glamour rock band Easy from Los Angeles – plays the drums.
