British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Duke J. Garwood is coming to Merleyn for an intimate show. He has collaborated in the past with Mark Lanegan quite often and he was also featured on albums of acts like The Orb and Archie Bronson Outfit. He has been building a body of work of his own in the meantime, touring all over the world in the process. His latest album “Rogues Gospel” came out in 2022 and is drenched in a sense of freedom.
The London-based multi-instrumentalist Duke J. Garwood worked together a lot with the late Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Mad Season, Queens of the Stone Age), for example on the album “With Animals”. His own music is mostly rooted in blues; records like “The Sand That Falls” (2009) and “Heavy Love” (2014) have a dark, suspenseful sound.
In the Summer of 2020, when a heatwave and a pandemic led to a worldwide lockdown, Garwood went into the studio with his old friend Paul May. The result was “Rogues Gospel”, his seventh studio album. The album came out in 2022 and is a response to an irresistible impulse to create open-minded, up-beat music. With this approach, Duke manages to cross the boundaries between folk and ambient without trading in his melancholy touch. Duke Garwood is an artist to cherish and he is a worthy heir to Leonard Cohen, one of his influences.
