In a very short period of time, Irish band Fontaines D.C. has become one of the leading bands within the contemporary post punk genre. Their music is drenched in poetry and witty lyrics, and their live shows are energetic and intense – so their reputation as one of the most refreshing young bands is a well-deserved one.
The band first came to the fore internationally in 2019 when their razor-sharp, catchy debut album “Dogrel” became one of the most praised releases of the year. With “A Hero’s Death”, Fontaines D.C. – with D.C. referring to Dublin City coincidentally – was nominated for the Grammy’s, BRIT’s, and Ivor Novello Awards in 2020, and they managed to sell out the iconic Alexandra Palace in London in no time.
The band is now back with their third album: “Skinty Fia”. The title, which refers to an Irish curse word, can roughly be translated to ‘the damnation of the deer’. The poetic metaphor behind it is another interesting one: the Irish deer is an extinct species and the band uses it to make a comparison to Irish identity and the privatization of culture on this new album.
Fontaines D.C. is a band in a constant state of evolution. This time this resulted in an album with a very diverse array of moods, different perspectives, maturity and an emotional bang. The tour for predecessor “A Hero’s Death” was cancelled because of covid, but the band is now back on tour to make up for it!
