French singer and composer Francis Cabrel is coming to Nijmegen for a show in De Vereeniging. Cabrel is one of the most successful French musicians that’s embraced by young and old fans in all of France and beyond.

Look for Francis Cabrel on Spotify and you’ll see a long list of hits. His name may not ring a bell immediately, but this singer has been famous for over 45 years in France.

“The troubadour from the Lot-et-Garonne” is his nickname in Paris, which is not just because of his Southwestern France accent, but also because of his chansons and swinging guitar blues. His lyrics aren’t only poetic but also of societal relevance. As a young man, Cabrel was inspired by Bob Dylan and started his career with folk music, with some country music thrown in for good measure.

Songs like ‘L’encre de tes yeux’ and ‘Petite Marie’ are evergreens in French music history. His first hit was called ‘Je l’aime a mourir’. Another hit like ‘C’etait l’hiver’, which deals with the suicide of a young girl, has been covered by tons of other artists, including Canadian singer Isabelle Boulay.
