With her voice, supporting herself on double-bass, Ganavya brings the Hindustani traditional narrative art of harikathā to the 21st Century. Ganavya encountered a lot of different art forms on her many travels and through extensive education, which include music and poetry. She combines these influences on her most recent album “Daughter of a Temple”.
For that record, she used the musical and spiritual legacy of Alice Coltrane as a starting point. She gathered numerous artists in the studio for the recording sessions, including leading jazz musicians like Esperanza Spalding, Shabaka Hutchings and Immanuel Wilkins.
Ganavya Doraiswamy was born in New York and grew up Tamil Nadu, India. She was described by American media as one of the most engaging vocalists of the current-day musical landscape. She demonstrated this with her impressive performances during her tour of last year. In October she’ll perform at Doornroosje.
