American singer and guitarist Jake Xerxes Fussell finds inspiration in the works of artists like John Prine and Michael Hurley. He developed into a passionate interpreter of folk songs in widest definition of the word.
Jake Xerxes Fussell is often mentioned in the same breath as modern guitar heroes like William Tyler and Ryley Walker. The American intends to reinvigorate forgotten folk songs with a fresh new twist of his own. Fussell’s weathered voice, his guitar-playing and his narrative way of singing and telling stories make him unique.
On his album “When I’m Called” that came out last year through the renowned Fat Possum label, Fussell goes back to his roots. Themes include the passage of time and the sequence of unexpected events in life. When making the album, Fussell was aided by Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station), Joe Westerlund (Bon Iver, Califone) and Blake Mills.
Xerxes Fussell grew up in Georgia and currently resides in North Carolina. Among his biggest fans are Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham and Bill Callahan.
