Tonight, Festival Jazz International Nijmegen presents a double bill of JaRon Marshall and Smag På Dig Selv in Doornroosje!
JaRon Marshall conquered festivals and venues worldwide as keyboard player of psychedelic soul band Black Pumas, who were nominated for 7 Grammy’s. Now it is time for him to take the spotlight with his own music: a personal mix of jazz, hip hop and soul, inspired by artists like Robert Glasper, Chris Dave and Curtis Mayfield.
With releases like “The Gold Tapes” and “The Black Power Tape”, he made a name for himself as beat maker, keyboard player and producer. His latest album “Earth Sounds” shows him turning melody, groove and production into a unified whole. For this project, he collected musicians from his home town of Austin, which includes saxophonist Brian Donohoe, who also played with Snarky Puppy and his own project Progger. Live on stage, JaRon Marshall is full of energy and with a layered and rhythmic sharpness. This is music that immediately allows the audience to be part of it.
A drummer and two saxophonists: it is the recipe for one of the wildest live bands from Denmark. Smag På Dig Selv (SPDS) from Copenhagen mixes jazz, punk and techno to a physical experience that confronts and swings. The music also has some elements from pop, hip hop, Afrobeat, death metal and nineties dance.
The trio is known for their uncompromising shows: engaging, loud and surprising. Next to their ruthless energy, they use Nordic throat singing, activist poetry and industrial elements to lure in their audience wholesale. What once started in the Danish underground has turned into a phenomenon that turns both venues and festivals upside down.
In 2024, SPDS released their debut album. They also won the Danish Music Award for the best new live act. We are expecting this to be a very memorable performance.
