Joachim Cooder, son of Ry Cooder, has made a name for himself as a drummer in his father’s band. He has gone solo in 2020. On his latest record “Dreamer’s Motel”, there is a wide array of music on display: there are vocal harmonies reminiscent of The Beach Boys and The Mamas and the Papas, but also an ode to the 18th century. There’s cajon, banjo and fiddle on the album, as well as a lullaby and even a psychedelic rock detour.
Joachim Cooder is a musical narrator who is capable of combining different styles and influences in an organic way to a unique whole. On his first album “Over That Road I’m Bound”, he saved the works of American artist Uncle Dave Mason from oblivion. He plays the African thumb piano as his main instrument, which also plays an important role on “Dreamer’s Motel”.
