Kokoroko is one of the most euphoric and successful formations in recent years in the jazz and afrobeat genre.

The South-London band comes from a rich jazz tradition and is led by trumpet-player Sheila Maurice-Grey, who brought together these young band members (all from the various jazz conservatories in the city).

Kokoroko’s music sounds like a modern take on West-African music of yore, inspired by iconic artists like Fela Kuti, Ebo Taylor and Tony Allen. The group also includes a saxophonist, trombonist, bassist, guitarist and percussionist and they tend to invite befriended musicians to join them on stage during their swinging, high energy live shows.

Things really kicked into high gear when the song ‘Abusey Junction’ went viral and appeared on jazz compilation “We Out Here”. Thanks to their live performances, they made a lot of friends along the way. They have played in Nijmegen before, both in the Stevenskerk (2019) and at Oranjepop (2019). This summer, they will also play at the Lowlands festival. After that, it’s time for a club tour again, which includes a performance in Doornroosje.
