Senegal band Orchestra Baobab creates a classic, warm blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms and African music. The band has earned a special place within the history of African music and recently celebrated their 50th birthday. 2020 didn’t offer any opportunities to celebrate it, but they’re back now to make up for it.
In 1970 Dakar a night club was opened under the name of ‘Baobab Club’. The night club was named after the national symbol of Senegal: the baobab. The residential band that played the club was named after the club: Orchestra Baobab. They have been the most iconic West-African dance band ever since. The tried and tested sound that made them legends is immediately recognizable, but the band manages to keep things fresh with lively twists and energetic additions to their sound. To celebrate their birthday, Orchestra Baobab will reissue their reunion album “Specialist in All Styles” from 2002, for the first time on vinyl.
