Festival Jazz International Nijmegen returns for 5 days of jazz across the entire town. Tonight, we have a double bill with Raúl Monsalve y los Forajidos en Adi Oasis in Doornroosje. Check fjin.nl for the full program.
Afro-Venezuelan rhythms meet Latin jazz, raw funk and Afrobeat on the exciting new album “Bichos” of Raúl Monsalve y Los Forajidos on Oline Records. The Venezuelan bassist Raúl Monsalve leads an all-star ensemble of genre pioneers, including “the voice of Venezuela” Betsayda Machado, singer Luzmira Zerpa and drummer Dave De Rose (Moloko, Mark Ronson).
Raúl Monsalve spent a large part of his life studying and playing traditional Afro-Venezuelan music, was taught by some of the best percussionists of his home country and showed interest in exploring the edges of jazz, rock and African music.
With producer/engineer/drummer Malcolm Catto (Heliocentrics, Quantic, Yussef Kamaal) on production and mixing, Raúl brought a group of like-minded friends from Venezuela, Paris and London into the studio to create a new, fresh sound, which set out to record the essence of both African and traditional roots of Venezuelan music, while also highlighting on the futuristic sounds of Afrobeat, Latin jazz and experimental electronic music.

French singer/bassist/producer AQdi Oasis may be familiar to you as the bass-player in CeeLo Green’s band, or as front woman of disco act Escort.
This talented musician with her warm mix of soul, funk and R&B has been striking out on her own for a few years now. Debut album “Adeline” (2018) and the following mini-albums “Intérimes” and “Adi Oasis” feature relaxed grooves that are reminiscent of the work of Anderson .Paak and the R&B, soul and jazz of the more innocent nineties.
