Rose City Band is the project of the American West Coast guitarist Ripley Johnson. The man is a phenomenon on guitar and made quite an impression with his other bands Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo. With his Rose City Band project, Ripley is taking a similar route as he did with the latest Wooden Shjips album “V.”: country vibes are a lot stronger now, even if the overall sound is still deeply entrenched in psychedelia.
When the touring schedule of his other bands were wiped due to Covid, Ripley started working on the album “Earth Trip”. This record is an ode to the beauty of the Earth, silence, hot Summers, and the good company of friends, which has resulted in songs that ooze with love for life. “Earth Trip” was almost entirely recorded in Ripley Johnson’s own house in Portland and was mixed by Cooper Crain (Bitchin Bajas, Cave). Traditional lack back West Coast songs are enhanced with psychedelic country, rock and twang flavours. There’s a melancholy edge to these compositions as well, further strengthened by the use of pedal steel and his familiar voice.
