The music of The Black Angels is somewhere in between that of the Velvet Underground, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane and the 13th Floor Elevators. Add mesmerizing drones and keys, feedbacking guitars and tons of reverb on the vocals, plus a ragged tambourine here and there, and you’ll have a good idea of their overall sound.

More than half a century ago, The Velvet Underground recorded the song “Black Angel’s Death Song”. The Black Angels didn’t just nick their moniker from it, their sound is also heavily inspired by the New York band. They hail from Austin, Texas and the band was founded in 2004. They released their first album in five years recently, a record called “Dead Song”. This features yet another link to the aforementioned song that gave them their band name. “Death Song” was recorded during the turbulent period of the 2020 U.S. elections, which heavily influenced the results.

Highly recommended to fans of authentic, mesmerizing, psychedelic, vintage sixties rock like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, All Them Witches, The Warlocks and Black Mountain.

Black Market Karma is tonight’s support act. The London band create heavy, fuzzy, psychedelic rock. In January 2023 their brand-new album “Friends in Noise” will come out.
