The Devil Makes Three has almost 20 years of experience. The experienced rock ‘n roll and Americana trio writes, tours and plays an awful lot; you could write a book about their exploits. Their self-titled debut album was an immediate hit in 2002. The album features fan favourites like ‘Old Number Seven’, ‘Graveyard’ and ‘The Plank’. The list with TDM3 hits has only grown overtime, while the band gradually accumulated a diehard fanbase through constant touring, their passionate live shows and constant onslaught of more high-quality albums. In 2018, TDM3 released “Chains Are Broken”, up to this day still regarded as their most exquisite work. Pete Bernhard’s weathered and provocative lyrics and vocals, combined with the typical style of guitar and banjo fanatic Cooper McBean, have kept this particular album prominently in the minds of fans.
The Devil Makes Three consists of front man and head songwriter Pete Bernhard on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, multi-instrumentalist and singer Cooper McBean on acoustic guitar, banjo and harmonies, and standing bass player and vocalist Morgan Even Swain. The band is known for their dark, literature-minded music that is rooted in the troubadour traditions of folk, Delta blues, whiskey-drenched ragtime and reckless rock ‘n roll with a punk attitude.
On 28 February 2025, their new album entitled “Spirits” will come out. It features 13 tracks and it’s produced by Tedd Hutt (Dropkick Murphys, Old Crow Medicine Show). This is their first album in seven years and the successor of the aforementioned “Chains Are Broken”. On this album, the band delves into heavier themes like spirits and death, as front man Pete Bernhard lost his mother, brother and a childhood friend in a short time during the album’s recordings. This is what he said about it: “The world is in a strange place right now. A lot of the songs on this record come from that place—trying to make sense of it all, whether it’s dealing with loss, addiction, or the way people are more divided than ever. But at the end of the day, this band has always been about celebrating resilience. We’ve always found a way to push through, and wanted to reflect that in this album.”
