Is “Worst Case Scenario” by dEUS the most important album in Belgian pop history? Or is their second album, “In a Bar, Under the Sea”? Tonight, you don’t have to choose as dEUS is coming to Doornroosje to celebrate their early career by putting a spotlight on these two classic albums. On their short European tour, dEUS is also coming to Nijmegen to play songs of these first two albums.
Singer, guitarist and front man Tom Barman and his band have been on an upward trajectory to international fame since their debut album came out. They became the best-known Belgian rock band from one day to another. Just listen to “Worst Case Scenario” today and it’s like listening to a blueprint of our alternative rock.
The album didn’t lose a single shred of urgency over the years. It was so influential that almost every Belgian band was inspired by it. “Worst Case Scenario” is untameably wild, extremely exciting, experimental, loud and sometimes all at the same time.
dEUS is much more than just that one album, though. Each dEUS fan has their own favourite. Rarely did a band demonstrate their potential for the next couple of decades so well as they did on their debut. Next to monster hit ‘Suds & Soda’ – perhaps the ultimate dEUS track – there are tracks like ‘Hotellounge’ and ‘Via’ that show the full spectrum of what a dEUS hit can be like.
The album’s successor, “In a Bar, Under the Sea” is an extremely strong second album with quality songs like ‘Little Arithmetics’, ‘Theme From Turnpike’ and ‘For the Roses’. The line-up of the band nowadays consists of Tom Barman, Klaas Janszoon, Stephane Misseghers, Alan Gevaert and Simen Folstad Nilsen.
