Maya Ongaku
Maya Ongaku consists of Tsutomu Sonoda, Ryota and Shoei Ikeda. Their sound is a mix of traditional Japanese folk and psychedelia. The band hails from Enoshima, a small island to the southwest of Tokyo.
The trio are part of the Guruguru Brain label scene, which also houses Japanese psych rock band Kikagaku Moyo and Minami Deutsch. Maya Ongaku started in Ace General Store, a vintage store where they not only curated the vinyl collections, they also organized jam sessions and recorded music in the studio that’s part of the store.
Despite the fact the band does not have a drummer, similar to the aforementioned bands, the band creates a psychedelic jam live that offers a perfect audio trip – they do so with the use of synthesizers and drum computers though. In 2023, they released their debut album “Approach to Anima”, an album on which their mix of genres fully came to life. A year later, the band released the EP “Electronic Phantoms”, which even sounds danceable.
