The influential band 16 Horsepower is reuniting for a series of concerts in 2026, which includes a show in Doornroosje on Thursday 28 May.
The band from Denver is not only impressive in the studio, but also live on stage. They also manage to reach a wide audience with their music. In the Netherlands, the band have performed at large festivals multiple times, as well as in Doornroosje for a number of memorable shows.
16 Horsepower plays a combination of roots, gospel, folk and bluegrass, with influences from country and modern rock, in an impressive manner. This is enhanced even further by the remarkable lyrics and vocals of charismatic master mind and front man David Eugene Edwards.
Their 1996 debut album “Sackcloth ‘n’ Ashes” was an immediate hit in Europe. 16 Horsepower excels at intense, roots-based guitar music with mystical lyrics inspired by Christian faith and spiritual interests. Remarkable are the nasal voice and raw, driven and almost possessed manner in which pastor’s son Edwards is exorcising his demons. Just like Nick Cave, themes often deal with guilt, redemption of sin and damnation.
Now, 21 years later, the core trio that consists of David Eugene Edwards, Jean-Yves Tola and Pascal Humbert is coming back together to perform live.
