Karate is one of the hidden gems of the nineties, back in the day when bands like Sophia, Explosions in the Sky, Low and Aerial M were popular. Their first few albums were mostly rock albums with some additional elements from jazz.
Karate was founded in 1993, recording their first cassette “Sometimes You’re a Radio” shortly thereafter. Two years later, their official debut came out and the band turned into a quartet. After a second album, “In a Place of Real Insight”, they reverted back to a trio, evolving their sound in diverse ways. First they explored a jazz-inspired sound, experimenting with song structures on “The Bed Is in the Ocean”; they dove into post-rock and indie rock next on the double-album “Unsolved”. They recorded two more albums and a live record before they decided to call it quits.
After a long battle to regain the rights to their catalogue, the band worked with the Numero Group label to reissue all of the albums that had long gone out of print. A year later, the band was formally back from their hiatus and they played their first shows in 17 years.
Singer/guitarist Geoff Farina also formed a duo with his girlfriend, the fragile yet beautiful band The Secret Stars. Karate is back once more and are going out on tour to promote their new record “Make It Fit”. This new album features the familiar Karate sound, which is a mix of indie rock, post-rock, and jazz.
