Ben Caplan is a true live performer. With his latest album “The Flood”, he once again demonstrates what it means to be a modern folk artist. Caplan’s style take inspiration from multiple sources, with melodies rooted in the Eastern-European klezmer tradition and a narrative skill that’s reminiscent of that of Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart.
The bearded Canadian with his raw voice manages to turn the sweetest songs into a comical spectacle. He effortlessly switches to songs full of gloom, only to switch it up once more with a big smile on his face.
Caplan’s first record came out in 2011, which means that he has been touring the world for over ten years for his live performances. At the end of 2021, he released “Recollection”, a retrospective collection of stripped-down, re-interpreted versions of his songs. He released the album “Old News” after that. The reason for his visit to Nijmegen is the most recent album “The Flood”, which came out in May 2025. According to Caplan, this is his most ambitious work to date: dark, sprawling and full of dynamics.
